Monologues for Women of Color

Feb. 3 to March 24 - Acting Intensive - Jersey City, NJ

For women actors of color, finding audition materials and roles is a multi-layered struggle. WOC actresses are often pitted against each other for roles as the token ___ friend, forced to embody harmful stereotypes or relegated to lifeless "any ethnicity" bit characters. The opportunity to portray an interesting, multi-faceted woman of color -- whose lines are written with an authentic voice -- is incredibly rare.

In this class, woman-identified writers of color will have the opportunity to work with award-winning writer and director Summer Dawn Reyes to bring to life a monologue written by a woman of their own background. In the process, they will also explore the importance of embracing one's own identity and better understanding the identities of others. Each actor will rehearse with Summer and prepare to share their work in a special performance for their friends, family and fans.

ABOUT SUMMER DAWN REYES AND THINKING IN FULL COLOR

After seeing a need for more authentic representations of women of color in the arts, Summer created In Full Color in 2015. The show was a hit and gave rise to what is now Thinking In Full Color. She is also the co-founder of 68 Productions, a theatrical company dedicated to producing work by and for people of color. She is a winner of the Permanent Career Award in Literature from the Society of Arts and Letters-NJ and the N.J. Governor's Award in Arts Education.

Thinking In Full Color (TIFC) is an organization focused on empowering women of color through education and the arts. Our primary realm is the theatrical world -- through performance and community-driven talkbacks, we empower female-identified creators while educating audiences about the need for diversity in the media, racial issues and cultural exchange. We also create opportunities for women in education, literature, visual art, music, comedy, dance and other fields. We have featured work by dozens of women from across the Americas and have received two commendations from the New Jersey State Assembly, numerous BroadwayWorld award nominations and the inaugural Performing Arts Award from the Jersey City Arts Council in 2018.
